Members receive recognition as distinguished students and members of one of the largest college honor societies in the world. All inductees receive from their campus sponsor a membership certificate suitable for framing and the Alpha Chi key, a recognition lapel pin. Members may also purchase official society jewelry and clothing.
Opportunities for Growth
Through involvement in local chapters and at the regional and national level, members develop practical leadership skills and gain experience in such professional activities as developing and delivering scholarly presentations, planning academic activities, and engaging in civic projects to "make scholarship effective for good."
Through their chapters, members may compete for Alpha Chi scholarships and fellowships, including 26 awarded on the national level totaling $74,000 a year. Alpha Chi's regions and some local chapters also offer additional scholarship programs.
Members are invited to attend annual national conventions, where they may present scholarly or creative work, network, and participate in civic and social events. Top student presenters receive cash prizes endowed by alumni and friends of the society.
Membership in an ACHS member society carries with it a tangible acknowledgment of merit for Federal employment. As long as the applicant meets the requirements as described in the job announcement, honor society membership may fulfill one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in numerous professional and technical occupations in the Federal Service. Alpha Chi membership is one of three methods by which a student can be recognized as having achieved Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) along with their Bachelor's degree.
Members may easily access Alpha Chi's publications online. The Newsletter, published once each semester, features chapter news and photos, member achievements, national prize winners, and convention news. The undergraduate research journal, Aletheia, showcases researched articles and creative endeavors from outstanding student scholars. Information on how to submit work for publication in this peer-reviewed journal can be found under Publications.
Members receive special offers or discounts from Alpha Chi's official partners, including insurance products and discounts offered by Nationwide, test preparation services from The Princeton Review, and exclusive worldwide hotel discounts. Through Alpha Chi's membership in the Association of College Honor Societies, our members are also eligible for stipends for summer internships and academic seminars offered by these ACHS partners: Washington Internship Institute, The Fund for American Studies, and The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars.
Subject to policies of the chapter and the institution, members may receive special recognition at graduation by wearing Alpha Chi honor cords, stoles, or medallions.
